Farewell Hurley Street

The day has arrived. After serving our wonderful Campbelltown community from our Hurley Street building for over 34 years, today we open for the last time at this location.

All our staff feel an amazing connection with our patrons and regard it a privilege to form a significant part of many of your lives. We love what we do and value your support over the many years we've been here. We will continue to care and provide a place where you can come and be informed, entertained, and engaged. Even if it's simply to escape the heat or cold, you are always welcome at any of our libraries.

There are exciting times around the corner! On Monday, 4 August 2025, HJ Daley Library will re-open at our new premises at Downtown Plaza in Queen Street. We hope to see all our regular faces again, plus many more new ones!

Here are some photographs taken throughout the 34 years at our HJ Daley Library in Hurley Street.

History Trivia

Calling all history buffs! Campbelltown City Council Library is celebrating this year’s History Week with a history trivia night at HJ Daley Library on Wednesday September 10 at 6pm. Great prizes to be won and light refreshments will be served. There will be a maximum of 6 people for each team.

The cost is $10 per person. Bookings are essential on 4645 4436.

The library is also hosting a display featuring Campbelltown during the war years from 1914 to 1918. Based on this year’s theme of “The Great War” it will feature photographs of Campbelltown during the First World War years as well as personal letters, diaries and other war related memorabilia. The display will capture what life was like for those at the home front.

The library is looking for objects that could be included in our display. This could be clothes, homewares, farming equipment, photographs or every day items from the 1914-1918 period in Campbelltown. In addition to items from the home front, we are also requesting war related memorabillia such as diaries, letters or photographs that could be included in the display.
If you have any items that you would like to lend the library for the display, please contact the library on 4645 4431.

The exhibition will run from September 6 to 14 at H.J. Daley Library.

For more information contact the Local Information Librarian at Campbelltown Library on 4645 4431.

92 Years Overdue!

October 1982 was amnesty month for Campbelltown Library. One of the books returned anonymously during the month was a book called "Poultry Breeding".  It came to the attention of staff that the book was due on August 29, 1890. This meant that it was 92 years overdue! The fine due on the book in line with the value of the day would have been $478.40.

The book had been borrowed from the forerunner of the present library service, the Campbelltown Free Public Library which was established in 1883 and which operated from the Town Hall building in Queen Street, Campbelltown (see our previous blog post). This service ceased to exist in 1905 and it was not until 1964 that the existing library service was established.

The above photograph is of the Town Hall with its new facade taken in 1892. If you look at the bottom far right window (click on the image to make it larger) you can just make out the word library. It was here that the book was first borrowed in 1890.
